Sure Foundations pt 2:
500 years ago, a German law student turned Catholic priest started a spiritual revolution. When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, he was certain of 2 things:
The truth about salvation had to be told! The badly distorted doctrine of salvation through good works, church traditions and self-improvement was wrong and he was compelled to correct the false teaching and present the Gospel as it is found in Scripture.
Telling the truth could cost him his life! He knew that his corrections of what the church was teaching would bring controversy and opposition and that he might face prison or even being burned at the stake.
In spite of the risks, Luther was compelled to act, even if it meant taking on the two most powerful institutions of his day: The Church and the Holy Roman Empire. The result was the Protestant Reformation which changed the face of Europe and Western Christianity. The simple message of salvation was given back to the common people along with the Bible (which Luther translated into German and mass produced on the famous Gutenberg printing press).
What is that message? There is only ONE WAY to receive forgiveness, new life and the assurance of heaven. There is only ONE PERSON who is able to save sinners and give them the gift of salvation. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life and Martin Luther was the man who sounded the alarm that the pure, simple message of the Gospel had been compromised and that the Church had to return to the Word of God who is the ONE TRUTH.
Here are some of the other sure foundations that were restored to the church through this most unusual beer-drinking German monk, priest and prophet! They are called "The Five Solas":
Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority.
Sola Fide (“faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.
Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King.
Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): We live for the glory of God alone.
Let’s get back to basics and follow Jesus Christ: the One Way, the One Truth and the One and only Life!
