Identity Issues pt 7: Gifts for Growing: Motivational Gifts

Ps. George Butron

Want to get in touch with your core identity and purpose in life? A good place to start is by discovering and developing the special gifts that you have. While there are a lot of personality profiles and aptitude tests available, the Bible has clear teaching about the good gifts that God gives to every person. We have identified three types of gifts: Gifts of the Father (basic motivations and passions given to every person at birth), Gifts of the Holy Spirit (specific manifestations of knowledge, revelation and power given at a particular place and time to a specific person or group of people), and Gifts of the Son (ministry gifts given to the church to equip God’s people for service). For a detailed explanation of these gifts, click HERE.

On Sunday, we looked at the 7 Motivational Gifts of the Father found in Romans 12:6-8
6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.” A simple definition of these gifts is below.

Motivational gifts are God-given strengths and dispositions. Everyone has a practical, helpful, motivational gift!

  • Prophecy - the eyes of the body of Christ

  • Service (Ministry, Helps or Hospitality) - the hands of the body of Christ

  • Teaching - the mind of the body of Christ

  • Giving - the arms of the body of Christ

  • Exhortation - the mouth of the body of Christ

  • Leadership - the head of the body of Christ

  • Mercy - the heart of the body of Christ

If you would like to explore these gifts further, let me suggest that you do a simple online inventory to help you identify your primary motivational gift(s). I have used it and found it to be helpful and accurate. This would be fun to do in a cell meeting! For a more comprehensive gift assessment that attempts to cover all of the gifts found in the New Testament, you can download and complete the Excel Spreadsheet of the Wagner Modified Houts Questionnaire by clicking HERE. This questionnaire is also available as a PDF file HERE.

My hope is that every person will discover, develop and use their unique, God-given gift mix to bless and serve others. These really are gifts for growing!

Grateful for motivating gifts,

Ps George
