Faith (Special Speaker: Mike Reyes)

As always, Mike Reyes inspired all of us through his ministry on Sunday. The subject: Faith! Starting with the latter part of the ‘great faith chapter’ (Heb 11:32-35), he essentially spoke about the three levels of faith:

1. No Faith.

This is the state of some Christians all of the time or of all Christians some of the time (my own observation). It was definitely the state of the disciples in the boat with Jesus during a storm. Jesus had to say to them; “Why is it that you are so fearful? How is it that you have no faith” (Mark 4:40). Mike also pointed out that this is not the normal state for a believer because Jesus was “amazed at their unbelief” (Mark 6:6)

2. Little Faith

Here Mike reminded us of Peter who got out of the boat and actually walked on the water until he took his eyes off Jesus (who is the Word of God) and looked at the wind and the waves (circumstances). Matt 14:22-36. He encouraged us to keep our eyes on Jesus, the Word, if we have little faith.

3. Immeasurable Faith

He encouraged us to have faith like the Thessalonians whose “faith grows exceedingly” (2Thes 1:3). Mike pointed out that another aspect is also highlighted here: “…the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other.” This kind of faith, therefore, grows through love and there is a direct connection between faith and love. “Faith works through love – choose love” he said. Another aspect he mentioned is that of practice. Heb 5:14 speaks about “those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Finally, he quoted John G. Lake: “It is easier to act yourself into believing than to believe yourself into acting.”

Another ‘Mike’ statement I liked was: “When you choose to love you have a ‘Godfidence’.”

The clear message that came through on Sunday was for those with ‘no faith’ to realise that that was not a normal state for a follower of Christ and that we needed to move on from there. Those with ‘little faith’ also needed to increase their faith to the point of having ‘immeasurable faith’ and that this can only be achieved through love (loving others and walking in God’s love). This is because “perfect love casts out all fear”. (1John 4”18).

Blessings,

Ps Howard
