Identity Issues pt 6: Gifts for Growing

We are called to grow up as followers of Christ and we have been looking at what is involved in moving from childhood into maturity. Ephesians 4 explains the essentials of growing in community, in character and in conduct. In addition, we have a supernatural, custom tailored growth booster that helps us thrive in every aspect of life. I am talking about God given gifts of grace that enhance and equip us for life and ministry. These gifts are multi-faceted and have a unique expression in every person. They are God’s good gifts for growing!

You can see three different categories or expressions of these gifts in 1 Cor 12:4-6: “There are diversities of gifts (charisma), but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries (diakonia), but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities (energema), but it is the same God who works all in all.” These gifts of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (who each have a special role in distributing good things to us) are given to build the church and to continue the ministry of Jesus through us. The two charts below help to highlight how this works:

The Holy Spirit gives the gifts of I Cor 12 to enable us to release supernatural ministry to others. Jesus gives the ministry gifts of Ephesians 4 to develop and equip God’s people in the church so they can grow in fruitful and effective serving. God the Father gives the motivational gifts of Rom 12 as natural dispositions, passions and abilities that each person receives at birth. After salvation, they emerge as the areas where people naturally grow and find their fit in ministry.

We need all of these gifts in operation in all of the church so we can show the whole ministry of Jesus to the whole world! You have a unique gift mix designed to make you a blessing everywhere you go. I want to urge you to get going and keep growing in discovering, developing and deploying your special, God-given gifts!

Grateful for so many good gifts,

Ps George
