We are starting a study in Ephesians that will look at our true identity in Christ. God’s Word gives us a clear understanding of who we really are and God’s amazing plans for our lives. While many people use assessments, theories and counseling to try and figure out who they really are, we have the advantage of going to our creator to look at His design for our lives and to discover the gifts, calling and destiny that He has planned for us for eternity.
All of this is found in Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. No other book in the New Testament explains this with the same wonder and depth as Ephesians. We are looking into the treasures of our salvation as we open this epistle. Paul begins by telling us:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”
Eph 1:3 (NKJV)
The verses that follow begin to unpack the most amazing collection of blessings anyone could dream of. Here we find unconditional love that chooses and accepts us as beloved members of God’s family. Here is complete forgiveness that makes us holy and blameless in His sight and removes all the stains of sin from our lives. Yes, here is God’s treasure chest of blessings on display for us to see, enjoy and experience! He is a good, good Father who wants to give us His very best.
A father’s blessing is one of the greatest gifts we could ever receive because it releases acceptance, affirmation, and approval into our lives. Sadly, many people never get to experience this kind of blessing from an earthly father but God, our heavenly father, has richly outdone himself in providing much, much more than we could ever hope for.
Below is a comparison of a good earthly father, Isaac, who gave his blessing to one of his sons. Note the difference between Isaac’s approach and God’s:
|A Father's Blessing|
|Waited until the end of his life||Gives us everything at birth|
|Seemed stingy with the blessing||
Is completely generous
|Made his son earn the blessing||Freely gives every blessing|
|Only blessed one son||Every child gets the blessing|
|Children desperate for the blessing||He gives before we even ask|
You and I are the objects of God’s blessing and love! Our true identity is found here as we discover how much He values and adores us, how fully He accepts and approves of us and how unconditionally He believes in and affirms us as His chosen sons and daughters.
Enjoy the affection and blessing of your Abba Father!
You are greatly blessed,
