About fifteen years ago, Tim Hughes wrote a worship song that captures the essence of why Jesus came to earth:
Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness.
Opened my eyes let me see.
Beauty that made this heart adore you
Hope of a life spent with you.

Jesus once said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12 NIV). At another time, He also said this to His followers: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others. . .” (Matt 5:14-16 NIV). So not only is Jesus the light of the world, He also tells us to shine.
Jesus is the source of all light and truth and since He lives in us, we also reflect his glory. He made it clear that this is our nature and assignment as His sons and daughters. Getting this truth right enables us to shine His light. The passage from Matthew 5 tells us three things that are worth remembering.
- We are (now) the light of the world! In His absence, we represent Him to others. Our fundamental nature was once darkness, but now we are light (Eph 5:8), suggesting a fundamental change in our nature that took place at salvation. Don’t have to ask to be a light, you already are one!
- We were designed to shine! Anything that hinders or obscures the light of Christ in our lives should be immediately removed. A light under a basket does not make sense and neither does a life in Christ that lacks the full radiance and beauty of His character and nature.
- We must stand up and deliver the light! A lighthouse is elevated to shine from a distance and Jesus said a lamp must be placed on a stand to give maximum benefit. You will start to light things up at home, work, school or in any situation because you take a clear stand for Jesus to shine for Him even when it is not easy to do.
Our mission is clear. We are to be human candles, anointed with fresh oil and burning with the fire of the Holy Spirit. God is calling us to Light it Up so ask Him to make you glow everywhere you go!
Shine Jesus, shine,
